1and1

1and1 reviews1and1.com was established in September of 1997. They are an enormous business that has over 6 million customers, and they employ over 2,000 employees. Inmotion is another company that compairs to them in terms of size and client base. 1and1 is not just a web hosting company, they also offer domain registration, eShops, mail hosting, and Microsoft Sharepoint (like iPage). In this 1and1 review I will give you an in depth look at what 1and1 has to offer.

1and1 Features

1and1 offers cheap hosting with a lot of bandwidth for the money. Their cPanel is pretty straightforward and easy to use. The control panel has a wide variety of tools from web site builder, tracking programs, and blog systems (a nice Wordpress installer.) Within about 10-15 minuets we were comfortable using their control panel.

They support Linux and Windows, too. Like most web hosting companies they do offer dedicated servers, too. However, when you sign up with 1and1 you are required to pay six months in advance. Granted it is under $20 dollars, but they sneak in some hidden offers, which can end up signing you up for services, you do not want. I would highly encourage you to read their terms of service carefully. What we don’t like about them is they try to lock you into longer contracts with their sneaky offers.

Support

Their customer service drives us up the wall They have the WORST custumer service ever. Many times people have called their technical support line only to be on hold for 20-30 minutes. Once you finally do talk to them they really don’t help you at all. Their staff doesn’t seem like they are very knowledgeable. So you might be thinking, you could just email them, but it can take up to a week for them to actually respond.

Here is the worst part about 1and1 hosting. People are commonly signing up for their service. After a year they will decide they don't want them or they want to go with another hosting service. Well, 1and1 does not send you any kind of notification about being signed up for another year of service. You will just get a surprise on your bank statement. You can call them to get them to reverse it, but it usually takes a couple times to actually get someone to do it for you. In some cases people have put a bank block on their care or just shut down their card because 1and1 just keeps billing them.

Uptime

One positive thing we can say about 1and1 web hosting is your sites will be up 99.4% of the time, guaranteed. They do have a great data center and do have many partnerships with other companies. You can trust that will always be around, but don’t expect too much support. Their server speeds are alright, but nothing great (not saying their uptime is top notch like Lunarpages, but it is pretty good).

Bottom Line

We would NOT recommend them; they have way to many complaints with the Better Business Bureau on them. To make things worse they fail to respond to complaints filed against their business. There costumer support is pretty much non-existent, too. There are certainly better hosting companies to invest your money with. However, if you are seeking a good hosting provider I would highly recommend you read my Hostgator or Fatcow review. Still not convinced that 1and1 is a horrible web hosting service.
