Choosing a Domain Name: Things You Should Pass Up

With the enormous number of people creating websites each day, trying to get a coveted .com name can be real tough. It’s even more exasperating when you thought you’ve finally come up with a unique, brilliant domain name only to discover that somebody is already using it. Frustration can sometimes induce you to pull a fast one to get as close to your dream domain name as you can get. However, some tricks can backfire and haunt your site for the rest of its web existence. Here are a few ground rules to give you pointers on what to sidestep when trying to pick a suitable domain name.

Say, you have decided to use the .com domain name aboutkids but somebody beat you to it. You’d be inclined to try about-kids instead. Worse, you could be doing business for your competition without even realizing it. You may want to rethink this approach.

Mind your numbers. Superficially, numbers may be a smart idea to incorporate in a domain name. Stop for a minute and think again. When people (or you, for that matter) talk about your website, the number has to be constantly explained, which is very inconvenient, to say the least. If your .com domain has a name like 5fashionfauxpas, chances are you would have to keep telling people that five is a number and not spelled out. It may seem trivial but still worth looking into. Website traffic still relies a lot on word-of-mouth for some boost and the rule of thumb is: the easier your domain name to say, spell and remember; the better chance your site has of getting visitors.

Don’t get too clever or too creative. When your choices for domain name revolves around a particular topic and are already taken, it’s likely that you’d play with several smart variations and witty alternatives. Being clever is fine – up to a point. Thing is, it can go both ways; it can either work great or turn out really bad. If the .com name allthingscrazy you pick for your domain is already taken, you might think it’s ingenious to use allthingscrazee as an alternative. You may be right but the odds aren’t in your favor; people will be looking for crazy with a “y” and you could end up driving traffic to your competition’s site. Now, that is terrible!

Zeroing in on a perfect domain name that hasn’t been thought of by others as well is no mean feat; but you have to be patient and persist with a name that is neither ambivalent nor confusing. It’s the best way to ensure that your customers will end up visiting your site and not someone else’s site.
