Detailed Dot5Hosting OverviewThis hosting service has recieved
Dot5Hosting
Dot5 Hosting was founded in March 2002. With servers in California, the company initially kicked off with feature-rich, low-priced Linux web hosting solution with a 30-day money back guarantee (much like InMotion). Being relatively new in the business, it has carved its own niche in the industry by providing customers with shared hosting packages that perform in response and according to customer needs. Dot5Hosting is actually well-known for its “budget hosting” because of the intensive focus it gives on providing hosting services at cheap and affordable prices. The company’s services are available for personal and business purposes.
Features
Needless to say the best feature that Dot5Hosting has is its dead cheap price; though the one drawback to this is it has only one existing plan, so not much choice there either. Dot5Hosting basically has the same services that packages from other companies offer; the only difference is the low cost at $3.95 per month. Plus, despite the very cheap price, Dot5Hosting plans are rich with valuable add-ons. However, there are outrageous restrictions to the files you can upload. There’s a maximum file name length and you cannot upload files that aren’t on their approved list (like DXF, for instance). Little things, you might say; but pretty annoying as you don’t have absolute control on what you want done on your website. Even connecting to your website is so tedious and inconvenient. You must log in first from their page to access your control panel or e-mail, which is plain ridiculous!
Speaking of control panel, Dot5Hosting uses the proprietary vDeck control panel, which is just fine as this utilizes state-of-the-art systems technology. But it’s not as user-friendly as the cPanel and if you’re used to cPanel, vDeck is such a pain to adjust (Fatcow and Hostgator use the industry standard cPanel). With regards to the email issues, they definitely need to upgrade to PHP 5 or something – maybe provide support for it. They could also use more web applications; as it is, they have very limited ones – they don’t even officially support Joomla! Sure, Dot5 offers a few forums and a content management system that you can install but the choices aren’t that great really.
Uptime and Reliability
Dot5Hosting apparently has external and internal problems in their systems. There have been an increasing number of complaints about their reliability. Email and database errors are rampant and they just keep saying they’re looking into the problem; or make some ridiculous suggestions that don’t resolve anything. Their server is so overloaded that doing anything on your website simply crawls until it crunches to a halt for hours on end. The promised 99% uptime is down to less than 90%, in fact. Customers are losing money with extensive outages and downtimes. With this kind of service, how could you even rely that transactions on your website are secure? Dot5Hosting could paralyze your business!
Customer Support
This is your Dot5Hosting worst nightmare. Their customer support is most likely outsourced and there’s the language barrier to start with. Talking to the staff is truly excruciating and clear communication is nearly impossible with the poor English you have to deal with. When talking on the phone, they put you on hold forever, only to come back with no clear solution, except to say give them time to look into the problem and fix it. You could die going through circular arguments with no resolution arrived at. Unbelievable! Even with tickets and e-mails, they take the same forever time to respond to your queries. All these make you think that the Dot5 tech support is really just a bunch of inept and incompetent staff that doesn’t know a thing.
And the saddest part is there have been numerous reports that this company refuse to live up to their side of the bargain on money-back claims. And you practically can’t cancel your account – not that easy! How much worse can it get?
Dot5Hosting Bottom Line
Dot5Hosting may have the cheapest price but I wouldn’t touch it with a pole. It is most unfortunate that their service is as cheap as the price they offer. You’d be wasting your time and money and probably lose a lot more from having a “now-you-see-it; now-you-don’t” web site caused by immense downtimes and crap service. There are plenty of affordable web hosting sites out there that can provide your web hosting needs more efficiently. I’m categorically saying Dot5Hosting doesn’t fit the bill, so, I absolutely don’t recommend it. I would recommend Hostmonster and iPage, though. Still not convinced that Dot5Hosting is a horrible web hosting service. Check out all these complaints on Dot5Hosting web hosting.
